Salinas, Ca: The California International Air Show is a non-profit organization produced by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and over 700 volunteers with the main goal of providing an event that is family oriented, educational and entertaining while raising money for local charities. This year the 28th Annual California International Air Show tops the 7 million dollar mark – with all that money going right back into the local community. To most of the Central Coast, the Air Show is a home grown community event. To the city of Salinas, it’s an annual infusion of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local community.
The California International Air Show has hosted some of the world’s finest military jet teams. This year the Air Show hosts the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flying their F-16 Falcons. The Thunderbirds are celebrating 55 years of representing more than 500,000 Airmen, National Guardsmen and Reservists worldwide. For the first time ever, the Canadian Forces Sky Hawks Parachute Team will drop from the skies over the Salinas Airport. The USAF F-15 Strike Eagle and the US-Navy FA-18 Super Hornet are just some of the other jets that will take part in the California International Air Show.
2008 marks the return of Salinas’ own Sean D. Tucker in the Oracle Challenger III, but this year it’s extra special as Sean returns as a member of the 2008 Class inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, joining the likes of John Glenn, The Wright Brothers, and Charles Lindbergh. It’s been a busy year for Tucker, he was also inducted into the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Hall of Fame. If that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, this year, Tucker is also flying lead in a new 4 ship aerobatic team sponsored by Airshowbuzz.com. Joining Sean as “The Collaborators” are Sean’s son, Eric Tucker – flying right wing, in an Extra 300L, Ben Freelove – flying left wing, in an Extra 300L, and air show veteran soloist, Bill Stein – flying slot, in his custom painted Edge 540. “The Collaborators are the ‘Hot New Thing’ in the Air Show Industry – and we’ve got ‘em’” said California International Air Show Executive Director Harry Wardwell.
The Air Show is proud to have 3 women pilots in the skies this year with Thunderbirds Lead Solo #5 Major Samantha Weeks, Julie Clark flying a T-34 Mentor and Jacquie B Warda in her “Red Eagle” Pitts. And there’s MORE!…… Joining the field are: 2007 International Council of Air Shows(ICAS) Art Scholl Award winner, Kent Pietsch and his Comedy Flying Act sponsored by Jelly Belly, the Indy Kids Jet School Bus and Air Show Announcer Extraordinaire, Rob Reider, winner of the 2007 ICAS Sword of Excellence Award, given each year to recognize outstanding service and personal contributions to the air show industry……..
